Cremation
is the process of reducing the body to its basic elements through a heating
process. Although frequently referred to as “ashes”, 
the
elements consist primarily of bone particles and fragments. These remains
are further reduced in size to be placed in a temporary container for transport
or in an urn selected by the family.
Cremation does not preclude a funeral service with a traditional visitation and committal service. It is even possible to have an open casket at the viewing. Cremated remains may be buried in a family plot or in a part of the cemetery specifically allocated for cremated remains. The remains may also be placed in an indoor or outdoor columbarium, or the remains may be scattered in accordance with local laws.
