Nicholas "Nick" DeCrease

Nicholas “Nick” DeCrease, aged 33, of Claymont, Del. passed away suddenly on Monday, December 4, 2017.

Our Nick was a loving, kind and generous man. He touched the hearts of everyone with whom he came in contact and shared freely of himself with others. Nick was, by trade, a mason until he became a paraplegic as a result of a motorcycle accident in 2007. Although he lived the rest of his time in a wheelchair, he pulled on his zest for life which got him through. He was an unforgettable character, and charmed everyone with his wit and his huge heart. He left a lasting impression on acquaintances, friends and family, and he will be greatly missed. He made friends easily and was always there to give someone a word of encouragement, a hug, or just a flash his famous smile. His humor and handsome smile were infectious. We will all remember his ability to make you laugh, especially if you were down.  

Nick was involved in local non-profits that put on free events for underprivileged children and he helped to organize and participated in several projects that provided much entertainment including games, food, prizes, and music. These organizations gave young children an opportunity they might not otherwise receive.  He volunteered at the A.I. DuPont Children’s Hospital where he entertained and read to the patients. He was well-loved by the children and the staff. He provided brightness and encouragement to so many people in spite of his losses and rarely centered on his own adversities. After his accident, he was part of the “Think First” program where he went to local high schools and spoke of the consequences of not keeping your eyes on the road or driving impaired. Just another way he shared of himself helping anyone he could.  

Nick was a loyal and loving son, brother, uncle and nephew. His shining imprint leaves a lasting impression on the hearts of many, especially his parents, Joe and Polly DeCrease, his sister, Tara (Bob) Thompson, and their children and all extended family.

As the saying goes, “It Takes a Village,” and Nick formed his village from the very start. His village of family and friends will continue to remember him and the love he so willingly gave.  We know he is in Heaven with his beloved “Nana and Pop.” We will celebrate his life on Saturday, December 16, 2017 , 11:00 AM, at the GEBHART FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, Delaware.  

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations in Nick’s memory to the A.I. DuPont Children’s Hospital, Nemours Children Health/Child life Dept., 1600 Rockland Road, Wilmington, De 19803.
