Thomas G. Blythe, age 93, of Claymont, DE passed away August 11, 2017.
A native of Upland, Pennsylvania, Tom left school at age 17 to join the U.S. Navy. He served a total of ten years during World War II and the Korean War. While serving, Tom played baseball, football and boxed in both Panama and Cuba. After leaving active duty, Tom worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 27 years.
Tom played, coached, managed and directed local baseball, football, basketball and boxing over a span of more than 50 years in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Over the years, Tom was heavily involved with the Chester Teener League, the champion Sun Village football team and various local basketball teams.
Tom served on the board of the Delaware County Athletes Hall of Fame for 50 years, holding the offices of Executive Director, President and Vice President. He won the Andrew W. MacMurtrie Sportsperson of the Year Award in 1962 and was elected to the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.
Tom was pre-deceased by his wife Rachel of 65 years in 2013. He is survived by his son, Donald Blythe and his wife, Mary of Wilmington, DE; his sister, Jean Olsen; two grandchildren, Aaron Blythe and his wife, Jessica and Megan Blythe-Hores and her husband, Mark; and three great grandchildren, Corinne, Chase, and Claudia.
A Viewing will be held Wednesday, August 16, 2017 from 6pm to 8pm at Gebhart Funeral Home, 3401 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703. A Funeral Service will be held at the funeral home Thursday morning, August 17, 2017 at 10am. Burial will be in Upland Baptist Cemetery, Brookhaven, PA.
