Doris M. Freebery Obituary

Doris M. (Drendall) Freebery, age 90, passed away peacefully, Wednesday,  October 24, 2018 with her family by her side.

Doris was born in Laurel Run, PA near the Poconos, one of seven children of Fred and Jenny Drendall. When she was 14, the family moved to Old New Castle, DE. She attended Brown Vocational School studying cosmetology. She had her first beauty shop in the front of her mother's house on 5th Street. After she married and had children, Doris opened her second beauty shop in her home on 13th Street where she did hair for more than 50 years.

Doris was a very creative person with many interests. She was never bored. If she wasn't making some handicraft, she was thinking about it. She loved to garden and bake. She did beautiful crewel work and sang with the Sweet Adelines, then later with St. Peter's Choir. If needed, she would come over and help you paint your house. And, she would make it fun. Doris had a wonderful sense of humor. Pretty much anything you did with Doris turned into a Lucy and Ethel type escapade, and she was definitely Lucy. Her best friend of 63 years, the late Kathryn Altice, played the role of Ethel.

Above all, Doris loved spending time with family. She babysat many of her grand and great-grandchildren. The kids loved coming to Mom Mom and Pop Pop’s because it was such a fun place to be.

Doris was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, George Freebery, in 2010; also by her parents; her brothers, John and Fred Drendall; her sister, Adele Rees. She is survived by sisters, Jane Crowding, Claire Sherman (Jim), Peggy Gerstley Trask (Dale); children, George (Sharon) Freebery, Stephen (Diane) Freebery, Kani (Jon) Brams, Andi (Greg) Stansky, with whom Doris lived; 8 Grandchildren, Kelley (Dean) Dannaker, Dawn Freebery, Stephen II (Karen) Freebery, Lucy (Jon) Parks Solinsky, Sam, Jake, and Gnat Brams, Dan (Alya Lloyd) Stansky; 10 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, November 9, 2018 at 11am at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 5th and Harmony Sts., New Castle, DE 19720, where friends may call after 10 am. Interment will be private.
