Buna Fletcher

October 12, 2021

Buna Fletcher, age 94, resident of Historic New Castle, passed away peacefully in her home on October 12, 2021.

Buna was the only child of Max Kadish and Helen Lager Kadish. A native New Yorker, Buna lived with her family in Brooklyn. Fiercely independent, as a young adult, she visited New York’s museums and parks, and spoke frequently of walking to Prospect Park and to Coney Island, often unaccompanied. After graduating from Brooklyn College, Buna worked in the New York public school system as a middle school art teacher. She met the love of her life, Wilford L. Fletcher, known to all as Fletch, and the two moved into an apartment in Greenwich Village.

Buna and Fletch moved to Fletch’s home state of Delaware after their wedding, establishing residence first in Wilmington and subsequently in Boothhurst. Upon the birth of their first child, Buna and Fletch moved to Historic New Castle where they remained for the rest of their lives. After dedicating some years to raising a family, Buna received a degree in Library Science at Drexel University. She served as the school librarian at Wilmington Manor Elementary School, at William Penn High School, with many of her favorite memories coming from her early years at Bayard Middle School in Wilmington.

In her retirement, she returned to her first loves and resumed taking art classes, painting and drawing. Buna was an accomplished musician who played in recorder ensembles with her husband and other local musicians. Later in life she also played at the Academy of Lifelong Learning in Wilmington. Those who knew her recognized her as a very talented artist and musician of great beauty and intelligence.

Buna was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Fletch, in 2004. She is survived by her daughter, Andea F. Lacombe of Wilmington; her son, Ethan U. Fletcher, of Wilmington; and four grandchildren: Daniel, Margot, Gabriel, and Noa.

A graveside memorial service will be held on Friday, October 22, at 1:30 PM at the Historic Riverview Cemetery, 3300 N. Market Street, Wilmington Section 18. Google Map Directions.
