Fay L. (Murphy) McCall, devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, of Wilmington, DE passed away on Monday, May 20, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.
Fay was a graduate of P.S. Dupont High School, followed by Goldey-Beacom College. She was employed by INA insurance and later Cigna, where she retired after a full career of dedicated service.
Although 88 at the time of her death, all who met her were surprised to learn of her age. Until her diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) just three months ago, Fay lived a very active and completely independent life. She was an active member and volunteer of Atonement Methodist Church in Claymont, as well as the Sellers Senior Center, where she was a standout in her Wii bowling league, putting up a perfect “300” score on several occasions. Fay loved attending the theatre, traveling with family or friends, reading or simply being a part of informal gatherings, sharing food and playing board or card games. She had a particular fondness of ELVIS and collected all types of memorabilia of “the King of rock and roll”. She could often be found gardening, in her yard, and was happy to take a break to chat with whoever may stop by. She loved her daily crosswords puzzles, but more importantly her daily devotions of “Mornings with Jesus”. She had a strong faith and lived her life with such love and grace.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Hannah Murphy, her son, Louis “Mike” McCall and her two brothers, Richard and Robert Murphy.
She is survived by her children, who love and miss her dearly, Richard “Rick” McCall (Lisa), Linda McCall (Wayne Stewart) and Debra McCall Reed; her grandchildren, Kerri McCall, Kelley Bryant (Greg), Jay Reed Jr. (Amanda), Lee McCall Reed (Kristina), Chelby and Madeline McCall; her great grandchildren, Ayden and Kiley Lewis, Emma Reed, Lindsey Bryant, Cameron and Chloe Reed. She will also be greatly missed by her extended family and countless friends, who she held dear across the span of her lifetime to include her neighbor of more than 40 years, Jodi Omlor. It was a comfort to her family knowing that Jodi (half mom’s age) was next door. Despite that age gap, they shared many meals, conversations, and outings. With Jodi, mom even experienced her first (and only) Uber ride!
There is no doubt that Fay’s greatest joy was her family. She loved and supported each one unconditionally. She was happiest when she was spending time with her kids and/or grandkids. A simple call, text or email would brighten her day. She had such pride in their accomplishments. It was a true honor for her family to help care for her over the past three months following her diagnosis and treatment. Through it all, she was a warrior, and her concern was always for everyone else rather than herself. Psalm 23:6 “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
A service to honor Fay’s life will be held on Monday, June 3, 2024 at 11:00 am at Atonement United Methodist Church, 3519 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703. Friends may call at the church at 9:30 am. Interment will be private. Fay regularly made donations to various charities. If you wish, please consider donating to the charity of your choosing in memory of Fay.
