Francis “Franny” Weaver, age 97, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, July 7, 2023.
Born in Wilmington, DE on March 26, 1926, he was a son of the late William J. and Mary (Bowles) Weaver. Franny attended the old William Penn High School and in May 1944 he was drafted into the Army Air Corps. Though Franny started in the Army Air Corps and trained as a tail gunner, he was moved into the Army infantry and was forward deployed to the Philippines to stage for an invasion into Japan. After his distinguished service in the WWII Pacific Campaign, Franny took a train from San Francisco back to Delaware, without fanfare, to start a new life.
Franny married the love of his life, Elizabeth (Walling), “his gal,” in 1955 and started a family. Franny worked for 28 years at Chicago Bridge and Iron and then had an additional career at Chase Bank. He was a proud member of the American Legion Canal Post #25 in Middletown, DE.
During his heyday, Franny and Betty traveled the world, visiting the Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, Haiti, Ireland and places all over the United States.
Franny had the biggest heart and was quick with a smile. He was the definition of a family man and valued family above all else. He enjoyed the frequent get-togethers he and”his gal” hosted and especially loved celebrating Christmas with a house full of family and friends.
Franny was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle and friend.
In addition to his parents, Franny was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; brothers, William, John aka Jack (Dorothy), Harry and Samuel; and sister Mary (Huey).
He is survived by his sons, Richard Weaver of New Castle, DE, Francis (Susan) Weaver of Largo, FL; granddaughter, Ashley Weaver; sister-in-law Marlene Weaver; and many nieces and nephews. He was the last of the Mohicans in this generation and will be dearly missed.
Franny, we love you a bushel and a peck.
All services will be held privately.
