George W. Hassel, Jr. Obituary

George W. “Skip” Hassel, Jr., age 70, a longtime resident of Claymont, DE passed away in the Christiana Hospital MICU, surrounded by his loving family.   

George was a 1969 graduate of Claymont High School. After graduating, he went to work for Acme Food Market, where he retired after 43 years of service.   For a short period of time, he was also employed by New Castle County as a crossing guard.  George enjoyed talking history and politics with anyone.  He loved the outdoors, kayaking, bicycling at Jim Thorpe, biking to the bay and any area bike runs that he could get into. His greatest passion was country line dancing with his partner, Sandy.  George was a 13 year member of the Claymont Fire Company and was a fire policeman the past several years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George W. Sr. and E. Jane Hassel; and sister, Pat A. Todd.

George is survived by his siblings, Edward Hassel (Maria) of Wilmington DE, Pam Petrucelli, of Wilmington DE, Penny (Doctor William Barkley) of Wyoming DE., Paul Hassel of Wilmington DE; brother-in-law, Rick Todd of Smyrna DE; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.   

The family would also like to extend their gratitude and appreciation to the entire MICU Team at Christiana Care for the exemplary care and compassion they showed during his last few weeks of his life.

A Viewing will be held at Gebhart Funeral Home, 3401 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703 on Friday, November 19, 2021 from 10:00am until 11:30am, where a Funeral Service will begin at 11:30am. Face Masks will be required and admittance will be regulated.  Burial will follow in Lawn Croft Cemetery, 1000 W. Ridge Road, Linwood, PA 19061.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Claymont Fire Company, 3223 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703 and/or St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 501 Duncan Rd., Wilmington, DE 19809.
