Harlan John Keeley, age 91, of Claymont, Delaware, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2025. Born on July 16, 1934, in Wilmington, Delaware, Harlan was the son of the late Annabelle Ridgaway and Harlan August Keeley. He grew up in Wilmington, where he built the foundation of a life defined by hard work, loyalty, humor, and deep love for family.
Harlan was a proud graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School, Class of 1953. That same year, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. From September 1953 to September 1956, he served honorably, stationed at Parris Island and Camp Lejeune, an experience he carried with pride throughout his life.
Following his military service, Harlan dedicated 30 years of his working life to Delmarva Gas and Power, where he worked as a service technician. Known for his strong work ethic and reliability, he retired at the age of 60, leaving behind a career he took great pride in.
Harlan was preceded in death by his beloved wife Joanne Keeley, his companion Lora Mayer, and his son John Keeley. He is survived by his children Steven Keeley, Lois O’Donnell, Linda Keeley and his Stepdaughter Tina Moretti. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to Steveni Keeley (Justin Evans), Stephen Keeley, Jonathan Keeley, Vincent O’Donnell (Erica), and Heather Bauerle (Tom), and a cherished great-grandfather to seven great-grandchildren who brought him immense joy.
Known far and wide as Wilmington’s most serious prankster and jokester, Harlan had a sharp wit and an unforgettable sense of humor. He was an avid hot rod and car enthusiast, a dedicated collector of Matchbox cars and historic postcards, and enjoyed fishing and dirt track racing. He especially treasured his monthly retirement gatherings with old friends and coworkers and never missed his Saturdays spent with friends at the Boothwyn Farmers Market.
Above all, Harlan loved being a grandfather. He cherished time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, famously hosting Christmas Eve parties that became treasured family traditions. His strong values were felt in everything he did—from his legendary, firm handshake to the way he showed up for those he loved.
Harlan’s legacy lives on in the stories told, the laughter shared, and the family traditions that will continue for generations.
Harlan will be remembered as a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, Marine, and friend—a man whose laughter filled rooms and whose presence left a lasting mark. His parting words to many were fittingly simple and heartfelt: “See you in the movies!”
