John Alexis Thomas Obituary

John Alexis Thomas, age 75, of Newark, Delaware passed away on Monday, April 29, 2024.


John Thomas was born on March 23, 1949 to the late, Joseph Harpel Thomas and Anna Olivia Stanert Thomas. After his 1967 graduation from Caesar Rodney High School, John enlisted in the US Navy and proudly served on the USS MACDONOUGH as a radar repair technician. After serving for six years in the US Navy, John attended Delaware State College and graduated with a degree in art education. John’s interest and ability to repair electronic equipment landed him a job with the Delaware State Department of Natural resources as an air monitoring equipment technician. John enjoyed a long career with the State of Delaware. Johns interest in air quality and the environment stayed with him well into his retirement. John volunteered his time at White Clay State Park and enjoyed photographing the diverse wildlife that frequents the park. John was also a long-standing member and supporter of the Wilmington Opera House.


John was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Margret Maloy Thomas, his parents, and siblings, Joseph R. Thomas, Mary Tatman, Frank Thomas, Charlette Thomas, Richard Thomas. John is survived by his brother, George Thomas and many nieces and nephews. 


A visitation will be held at Gebhart Funeral Home, 3401 Philadelphia Pike. Claymont, DE 19703 on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 from 11:00am until 12:00pm, where a Memorial Service will begin at 12:00pm.   A private interment will take place on a later date in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE. 


In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Grand Opera House of Wilmington Delaware.
