Mary Jane Sheftz Obituary

Mary Jane (M.J., Janie) passed away after a short illness on February 16, 2026.  A resident of Claymont, Delaware, she was born in Brooklyn, New York to the late Michael A. Lapes and Jane V. (Musella) Lapes.  She was raised in Brooklyn where she attended Immaculate Heart of Mary Elementary and Bishop McDonnell High School, graduating with the class of 1969.


Shortly after graduating high school, she met Jim Sheftz and was married on May 8, 1971. 


In 1972, she embarked on her 40+ year retail career with Strawbridge & Clothier retiring in 2013.  While at Strawbridge’s she met and established great friendships that still endure.


Mary Jane enjoyed bowling, ceramics, crocheting and making craft items to gift to family and friends.  She was also a valuable member of the Claymont Moose Lodge where she enjoyed volunteering and being a member of the Women of the Moose #186.  While a member of the Moose she held various leadership positions such as, Senior Regent, Sunshine Chairman and member of the Retention Committee.  She held the degrees of the Academy of Friendship and College of Regents (which she was most proud of).


Mary Jane was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Jim, her parents, Michael and Jane, and her brother, Peter.


She is survived by nephews John (Peggy) Borgese, Greg Borgese and godson, Brian (Aimee) Maggs.  She is also survived by great nephew, Tyler Borgese and great nieces Brittany and Erin Borgese.  Additionally, Mary Jane loved her fur baby, Allie.


A visitation will be held at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 3200 Philadelphia Pike on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, from 10:00am until 11:00am, where a Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00am.  Burial will be private.
