Milko “Mirko” Fatovic, 92, passed away peacefully at his home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on July 6,2024 in the company of Mirjana, his loving wife of 71 years.
Milko was born on the island of Sestrunj, Croatia to the late Bozo and Matija (Visich) Fatovic on January 23,1932. As the oldest son, Milko worked to support his family on Sestrunj through many good and some very difficult times, including the occupation of the region by German and Italian fascist soldiers during World War II. Milko was a prolific fisherman, first on the Adriatic Sea as a young man to help support his family, and then recreationally for the remainder of his life on the beaches of Delaware and Florida.
Milko married his wife Mirjana Saraga from the nearby island of Ugljan, Croatia on June 1, 1952. In 1961 Milko left post-war socialist Yugoslavia for France to search for a better life for his wife and his two young sons, Goran and Bozo. Milko worked as a mechanic for a family business in France and lived there with his family in the spare rooms of the home owned by his self-described generous and caring employer.
Milko continued his adventure in 1964 when he immigrated his family to the United States to be closer with his parents and brothers, Robert (Bozo) and Steve (Svetko) Fatovic. Milko was employed as an electrician and eventually became a long-time resident of Claymont, Delaware. He retired with Mirjana to Sebastian, Florida in 1999 where they enjoyed an active life with many friends, family, and visitors.
Milko had many fond memories of his life in Sestrunj and the former Yugoslavia. During his retirement, he would often look up random Croatian names in the phone book and call people to see if they had any connections, surprisingly with a fair amount of success. He was so proud of his family and heritage and loved sharing stories of his days in Sestrunj and the nearby city of Zadar.
Milko Fatovic was a proper Dalmatian.
Milko is survived by his wife Mirjana (Saraga) Fatovic, son and daughter-in-law, Goran and Dolores Fatovic, brother and wife Robert and Arlene Fatovic, sister-in-law Peggy Fatovic, nieces Anita Svorinic, Diana and her husband Josip Jerolimov, Michelle and husband Sean O'Keefe, Matija O’Keefe, nephews Robert and Leeanna Fatovic, Kenneth and Mary Fatovic, Robert "Robbie" Fatovic, Luke Fatovic, Gavin O'Keefe, and cousins Debbie and Vicki Saraga, Mildred Fatovic and his loving caretakers Dolores Frances, Maria Malcom and Petrina.
Milko was predeceased by son Bozo Nikola Fatovic, sister and brother-in-law Milenka and Alberto Svorinic, and brother Steve Fatovic.
A viewing will be held at the Gebhart Funeral Home, 3401 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703 on Friday, July 19, 2024, from 9:00 am until 9:45 am, where a funeral service will begin at 9:45 am. Burial will follow in Cathedral Cemetery, 2400 Lancaster Ave., Wilmington, DE 19805.
