Randy Hoopes passed away September 19, 2023 at his home in Arden, Delaware at the age of 64.
Although his health had been failing, Randy continued to work in retirement at Boscov’s. Previously he spent forty-three years as The Guru for Sears Automotive Centers, first at Prices Corner, and then at Concord Mall.
Randy attended Arden School, then Mt. Pleasant and graduated from Sanford School in Hockessin in 1977. He also attended the University of Delaware, where he majored in Sociology. Three of his schools had radio stations, and since he loved everything about broadcasting, he took full advantage of that!
He was very adventurous and traveled to 49 states and many other countries. One very memorable trip was to search for the family’s ancestral home in Skelton-in-Cleveland, England where his Quaker family resided before coming here in 1683, settling in Chester County, PA. The family moved to Arden in 1932.
Randy had a wonderful and unique sense of humor. One of his favorite sayings was, “I know a LITTLE about a LOT.” His interests were very wide-ranging from collecting unique objects to attending small concert venues. He supported the local music scene and was an avid listener of WMPH, WVUD and WXPN radio. He loved learning EVERYTHING, loved meeting new people, and his circle of friends was vast. If you were a friend of Randy’s, you were a friend for life.
Randy, along with his brother, Greg, were the Arden Fair announcers for over twenty years; minding the flow of the iconic Fair, providing background music, and reuniting lost parents with their children. The announcer’s booth became The Place where Randy welcomed new and old friends. His front yard in Arden became “The Shady Vista,” a haven for folks to put their feet up on hay bales, take care of babies and find water for their pets, all due to Randy’s love and care.
He was predeceased by his loving father, Linnaeus Hoopes in 2019 and will be dearly missed by his mother, Marcia Jones, brothers, Greg (Jocelyn, Annie, Christian), Mitch (Ayse) and Zach, and his long-time friends and confidants Tinsley, Vanessa and Chrissy.
A Celebration of Life for Randy Hoopes will be held in The Gild Hall, 2126 The Highway, Arden DE 19810 on Friday, November 17, 2023 from 11am until 4pm. Please join his family and friends for what Randy loved best; stories, laughter, and fellowship!
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in Randy’s name to the Buzz Ware Village Center and/or the Arden Club, supporting the programs that he was intensely involved with during his lifetime.
