Raymond Donald Mears, age 92, of Claymont, Delaware, died on April 22, 2023, after putting up a hard fight against Alzheimer’s.
Ray, as everyone knew him, was a Claymont legend. Ray graduated from Claymont High School in 1950, where he excelled at football, basketball, and baseball. Ray always told stories about the time he had to miss a major league baseball try-out to help at home. Upon graduation, Ray decided to aid his country, and joined the Navy. Ray served on several destroyers during the Korean War. After the Navy, Ray worked for the telephone company until retirement.
Ray was an avid golfer, sportsman, race-horse handicapper, and animal lover throughout his life. He was a big supporter of University of Delaware athletics, particularly Blue Hen football. Ray loved his cat and would stay home if his cat was sick while everyone else went to the Casino.
Ray was predeceased by his son, Raymond junior. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lois; his daughter, Marie Dams, her husband Al, and 5 grandkids, Dominic, Vincent, Bianca, Monte and Riddick of Seattle, Washington.
We would like to thank all the people at Arden Court for the compassionate care they provided him there.
Services will be held privately.
