Shirley Ann Laffey Obituary

Shirley Ann Laffey, age 65, of Wilmington, Delaware, died peacefully in her sleep on April 27, 2023. She is predeceased by her husband, William T. Laffey III, her beloved dog, Mr. Bentley, and her brothers, Gary J. Horner, Franklin P. Horner and Allen R. Horner, all of Bivalve, MD.


Born in Bivalve, MD to the late Roy and Stella Horner, Shirley graduated from Newark High School and Delaware Technical and Community College before working as a business analyst for AIG and Metropolitan Life Insurance Companies for over 35 years. She enjoyed spending her time raising her children, laughing, gardening, vacationing, spending time with her grandson Jacob, and adopting any animal that came to the door.


Shirley is survived by her son, Cory W. Laffey and his fiancée, Emily of Wilmington, DE; her daughter, Erica Cooke of Wilmington, DE; grandson, Jacob Nieves; sister, Joan Luzier of Chichester, PA; sisters-in-law and their spouses, Mary Lou and Richard C. Rhodes of Wakefield, RI, Ann Thurlow of Wilmington, DE, Kathryn and Pat Montgomery of Lewes, DE, and Maureen L. and Edward J. Freel of Wilmington, DE. Shirley was also a proud loving aunt to many nieces and nephews.


Shirley will be remembered for her compassion, laughter and love. We are all privileged for having been blessed with such a kind woman.


A visitation will be held at the Gebhart Funeral Home, 3401 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703, on Monday, May 8. 2023 from 5:00PM until 7:00PM. Burial will be private.
