William Lee Shorter
(1934-2023)
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of William Lee Shorter, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, and Navy veteran. As a dedicated family man, Lee departed this world on October 30, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.
Born in 1934, Lee embarked on a remarkable 65-year journey of marriage alongside his devoted wife, Joan. He was the proud father of two sons, William and Charles, and being a Pop-Pop provided Lee with tremendous enjoyment for many years.
One of Lee's most cherished hobbies was his passion for model trains. He found solace and delight in creating intricate landscapes and watching his model trains traverse their routes. His enthusiasm for this hobby brought joy to his life and the lives of those who shared in his passion.
Another wonderful pastime of Lee's was genealogical research. Many hours were spent online searching for ancestors and developing detailed family trees. Through his inquiries Lee made contact with many distant relatives.
William Lee Shorter proudly served his country in the United States Navy, stationed aboard the USS Truckee (AO-147). His dedication to the Navy was a testament to his love for his country and a source of immense pride.
Beyond his military service, love for genealogy and model trains, Lee had a deep appreciation for the great outdoors. He enjoyed camping and set out on many memorable road trips, creating lasting memories with his loved ones. He and his wife managed to visit all 50 States during their years of traveling. Lee was also a long time Boy Scout leader for local troop 61.
Lee was preceded in death by his parents, William Walker Shorter and Dorothea (Terrell), and his sister, Virgina Conley. He is survived by his loving wife Joan; his sons, William "Bill" Shorter (Laura) of New Castle, DE and Charles "Chuck" Shorter (Joyce) of Mt Holly, NJ; and his sister, Mary Beth Majesty of Lillian, AL. Lee and Joan have been blessed with 6 grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.
William Lee Shorter's memory will forever be cherished by all who knew him. A viewing will be held on Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 3200 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703 from 10:00am until 11:00am, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:00am.
