William S. “Bill” Witkowski, age 88, of Wilmington, Delaware, moved on peacefully in his sleep on September 24, 2025 at home, surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Chester, PA, Bill grew up in Claymont, DE graduating from Claymont High School in 1955 where he lettered in baseball and basketball.
A Veteran of the United States Army he served from 1955 – 1963, where he also played sports in honor of our country.
Bill was a member of Iron Workers Local 451. He was a proud Ironworker and often told stories of how he helped in building many of the local buildings and bridges.
In his retirement, he enjoyed woodworking, creating many pieces that he would give to others to enjoy. Bill was an avid hunter and fisherman, he enjoyed fishing out of Bowers Beach and deep-sea fishing in Florida with his friends. Bill was a member of the Knights of Columbus and VFW. He was a lifelong sports fan, he especially enjoyed cheering on his favorite teams, Philadelphia Phillies and the Philadelphia Eagles. – it is believed he bled green.
Bill leaves behind his children, Dianne Dougherty (Tom), Sharon Moore (Charlie) and Donna Maloney (Doug), and was a proud grandfather to Alyssa Moore and Bailey Maloney. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and William Witkowski; Peggy Witkowski, his wife of 20 years and mother of his children with whom he shared the joy of raising a family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in his name to Delaware Hospice.
A viewing will be held Monday, October 6, 2025 from 10am to 11am at Gebhart Funeral Home, 3401 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703, where a funeral service will begin at 11am. Committal will follow at 1pm in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE 19701.
