Carey Rowland

Carey de Lisle Norrish Williams Rowland of New Castle, DE, passed away at age 74 on Thursday, April 8, 2021.  Born in London, England on October 3, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Commander Geoffrey and Betty Williams.

As the daughter of an officer in the Royal Navy, Carey moved frequently and lived all over Great Britain and Europe, but she especially loved her time spent in Bath and Malta.  In 1968, Carey ventured off on her own to Australia where she spent three years.  It was there that Carey met a “Yank” named Hickman, whom she would follow back to the States to marry in 1971.  They were happily married for 46 years until his death in 2017.  Carey became a U.S. Citizen in 1991.

Carey was devoted to her family, friends, and dogs.  She was full of energy and loved walking her dogs, listening to books on tape, and engaging in interesting conversation.  She enjoyed theatre, good food, and had the perfect outfit for every occasion.  Carey’s quick-wit, ornery sense of humor and generosity will be greatly missed.

In addition to her parents, Carey is predeceased by her husband, H. Hickman “Hick” Rowland, Jr., their daughter, Sally, and her brother, John.  She will be dearly missed and is survived by her son, Chris (Jenny), daughter, Lindsey (John), five grandchildren (Madeline, Sawyer, Harrison, Anise, and Finnegan), and two Norwich Terriers (Remington and Ripley).

Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, June 12 at 11:00 AM at the Immanuel Episcopal Church, 50 Market Street, New Castle, DE 19720.
