Charles Edward Toner

Charles Edward Toner, “Charlie”, age 84, of New Castle, DE died peacefully in his sleep on October 5, 2021, after a short illness.

Charlie worked at the News Journal for 45 years. He was a great teacher and dedicated worker. The folks he worked with liked and respected him. They teased him about carrying a “pica pole” in his back pocket all the time.

If you wanted a job done quickly and correctly, Charlie was your man.

Charlie served in the Army and National Guard for 23 years. He was an excellent soldier and he was proud of his service in the military. He was awarded the bronze star for his service during the Berlin/Cuban crisis. He received many awards for outstanding service from his superior officers.

Charlie and his brother Bob, who was also his best friend, enjoyed hunting together for many years, deer and rabbit were their targets.

He was preceded in death by his parents Joe and Helen Toner, brothers Jody Toner and William Toner.

Charlie is survived by his long time companion and partner, Virginia Strohm of Claymont, DE; his brother, Bob Toner of Townsend; his son, Steve Toner (Charlotte);  step-granddaughters, Shelby, Maddie and Payton of Fort Worth, Texas; son, Greg Toner (Debbie); granddaughter, Corean Toner of Townsend, DE; daughter, Cheryl Toner (Steve), of St Thomas The U.S. Virgin Islands; his former wife, Fern Toner Horist (Jack), of New Castle, DE; nephew, Robert Toner, Jr. (Jackie); niece, Sharon Toner (Robin); many additional nieces and nephews; Virginia’s children, Phil (Sharon), Steve (Rosemary) and Dee Strohm (Gary), who loved him like a father.

Charlie was one of a kind, a true gentleman and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
