James C. Walker, Jr. passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at the age of 81, surrounded by his family who will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest.
Born in Wilmington, DE, in 1943, he was a graduate of Claymont High School and served in the Navy from 1961-1965. After retiring from General Motors in 1995 he worked miscellaneous jobs thereafter, always keeping busy. Jim was a proud lifetime member of the Claymont Fire Company and Disabled American Veterans Association.
Jim loved life and lived it with gusto. Always quick with a smile and a story, Jim relished meeting new people and was infamous for helping anyone who needed it. He told his beloved wife ‘Joni’ he would marry her the first time he met her at a mutual friend’s wedding, and six dates later he proposed. Jim enjoyed the Pushmobile Derby with his two sons, and sponsored numerous community children after his own sons were grown. He was renowned in the antique car world, winning several national awards with his Studebaker. Jim was happiest on a boat with a fishing rod in his hand, surrounded by good friends and loved ones.
Jim is survived by his wife of 47 years, Joan R. Walker, and his two married sons, James C. Walker, III and Jennifer Walker (née Richman), and David S. Walker and Michelle Baker. He was a very proud Pop-Pop to four grandchildren, Katherine Lucille, Dylan Scott, Josephine Mae and Leah Nicole. Jim was predeceased by his parents, James C. Walker, Sr. and Frances Casey Walker, and his sister, Marietta Giles.
A viewing will be held Friday, March 8, 2024 from 10am to 11am at Gebhart Funeral Home, 3401 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703, where Jim will be honored and celebrated with a service at 11am. Burial will follow in Lawn Croft Cemetery, 1000 W. Ridge Road, Linwood, PA 19061.
