John Leonard Obituary

John Leonard, age 74, of Claymont, DE passed away on Monday, June 25, 2018.  At the time of his death, he was a resident of the Wayne Center Nursing Home, where he resided for the past year after complications from a stroke in late 2015.

John was born and raised in NYC and was often lovingly referred to as ‘Brooklyn John’.  He was the son of the late James Leonard and Loretta (McGrover) Leonard.

John was a NYC Parks Department worker and of the several jobs he held over the years, this was the one he truly loved.  After moving to Delaware, he worked for Harry Kenyon until they closed.

Once John moved to Delaware, he became a volunteer with the Claymont Fire Company.  He was a life active member and proudly served as a Fire Police Officer.  During this time, he also held the position of Assistant Treasurer of the New Castle County Fire Police for several terms.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, James Leonard.  He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Clare (Biebart) Leonard; his children and their spouses; Mary and Dave Stroble, Tom and Caitlin Leonard; his granddaughter, Lorelei Leonard; his sisters, Geri Salvato, Ann Zenk and her husband, Walter, Jane Strauss; his beloved extended family and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to sincerely thank the staff of the Wayne Center Nursing Home for their compassionate and loving care of John during the past year.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 3200 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703 on Saturday, June 30, at 12 noon. A visitation will take place Saturday morning at the church from 11:00 am to 12 noon.  Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in John’s memory can be made to the Claymont Fire Company, 3223 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703.
