Lawrence J. MacNamara Obituary

Lawrence J. MacNamara, age 81, of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 23, 2019.

Larry was a true Salesianum gentleman, who graduated in 1956.  He then joined the United States Marine Corps and served his country proudly.

In October of 1959, Larry married the love of his life, Joanne K. Columbo.  They shared 57 years together until Joanne’s death in March of 2016.

Larry was an avid golfer and member of the Delaware State Golfer’s Association and the DuPont Country Club.

Larry loved a good cigar and was at his happiest sharing tales with family and close friends.  He truly had the gift of gab.

Larry was predeceased by his sister, Theresa Hennessy; his brother, Tommy Freeland; and nephew, Thomas MacNamara.  He is survived by his brother, James (Jill) MacNamara; sister-in-law, Roseanne Freeland; brothers-in-law, Dominic (Jean) and Vincent Columbo; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family would like to acknowledge Larry’s special friend, Mara Carmean, who helped him in many ways during his most difficult days.  Also, a special mention to his nephew, Timmy MacNamara and his wife, Tori for all their assistance and guidance.  Larry was truly loved and will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be held Friday, November 1, 2019 from 11am to 12pm at Gebhart Funeral Home, 3401 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703, where a Memorial Service will begin at 12pm.  Burial will be private in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Catholic Charities, 2601 W 4th St, Wilmington, DE 19805; or ALSAC/St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
