Marie A. "Toni" (Dougherty) Marvel

Marie A. Marvel, longtime resident of Claymont, Delaware, passed away June 20, 2019.

Toni was born in 1924 in Chester Pennsylvania.  She was the first daughter of Joseph C. and Antoinette Dougherty.

Toni served her country as a WAVE in the US Navy during WWII. She was proud of her military service and in the 1980’s was one of the founders of the First State Wave Unit, which is now the First State Military Women Warriors open to all branches of service.

Married to Thomas A. Marvel, Jr. in 1946, they lived and raised a family in Claymont, where they were members of Holy Rosary Parish. Toni was active in the parish and could be seen fifteen years in a row at the annual carnival in clown costume selling balloons. She volunteered in numerous capacities:  Den Mother, Little League Mom, Mom, Mommy, Grand mom and GG. She was an avid Phillies fan.

She loved traveling, cruising, trips to Florida and having family and friends gathered for picnics in her backyard. Toni had a Nursing career that spanned 40 years and included hospitals in Pennsylvania and Delaware. She retired from Shipley Manor, where she later lived and was lovingly cared for by friends, family and Compassionate Care Hospice.

Toni is survived by her children, Claire M. Lacey (Joseph), Glen Mills PA, James B. Marvel (Christine) Delray Beach, FL, Thomas A. Marvel III, Wilmington, DE, Rita C. Demko (Joseph), Lewis Center, Ohio, Patrick J. Marvel, (Kelly), Claymont, DE, Michael J. Marvel, Claymont, DE, Mary (Bunny), Sheridan, (Jerry), Port Deposit, MD; siblings, Beatrice Regan, California, Loretta Sellers, Missouri, Cyrilla Oldaker, Missouri; 14 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her parents; her husband; her brother, Joseph Dougherty, Jr.; sisters, Teresa, Rita, Leah; and her son, Joseph C. Marvel (Barbara).

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Wednesday, June 26, 2019 at 12noon at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 3200 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703. Friends may visit with the family Wednesday morning at the church from 10:30am – 12pm.  Burial will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
