Robert Lee Simon, son of the late Roosevelt Simon, Sr. and Josephine Jones, was born on March 18, 1942 in Greenwood, South Carolina. He fell asleep in death on May 6, 2019, in the Seasons Hospice Unit on the 6th floor of the Christiana Hospital.
He received his early education in the public schools of Greenwood, South Carolina and graduated from Brewer High School. While attending Brewer High School, he received special awards for track and field. After graduating high school, he received further training as an auto mechanic, for which he was well-known.
Some years later, he was drafted by the Army and served for 18 months in the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in June of 1968.
After his duty in the United States Army, he became employed at General Motors as a line worker. He continued in this capacity until his retirement. He also worked at the Port of Wilmington as an International Longshoreman. He continued in this capacity until his retirement in December 2016.
He enjoyed eating, laughing, traveling, roller-skating and spending time with his family and friends. He was a very gregarious and loving person.
He is survived by his children: James Kellum, Wendy Weston, Tangie Johnson, Tarryl Robinson Sr., Robert K. Simon, Jonie Culbreath and Jonathan Culbreath. He is also survived by his dear sister, Sara Lee Hackett, his beloved cousin, Rebecca Tate and a host of grandchildren, family, and friends.
A Viewing will be held at Gebhart Funeral Home, 3401 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703 on Friday, May 17, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. where a Funeral Service will begin at 12:00 p.m. Burial will be private.
