About Us

Our History

Gebhart Funeral Home was started in 1919 when the Gebhart family purchased the business from Mr. Charles H. Clewell. The original location at 531 Delaware Street in the city of New Castle was built as a funeral home in 1885. This funeral home is the oldest existing funeral establishment in New Castle County, Delaware.

The Claymont Chapel located on Philadelphia Pike, north of Wilmington was originally built in 1915 as a vacation home for a Philadelphia plumber. It was converted into a full service funeral home in the 1950’s after William F. Jones purchased the property. Through a strong friendship and professional relationship with Mr. Jones, the Gebhart family purchased this location in 1972.
